Most days, yes. Today, it’s all about hot air balloons. Every year, I try to make it to the Adirondack Hot Air Balloon Festival in Queensbury at the Floyd Bennett Airport. This year was a little more exciting. I had never been for the early morning lift off. So, I said “Why not” and decided to get up early and head up.
We left home at 3am (ish) and started the journey to Queensbury. We got there a little after 4am and there was already 30 or 40 cars ahead of us waiting to get in. They wouldn’t open the gates until 5, so the traffic began to pile up. After a few minutes, they shut the road down and brought some of the traffic up the opposite side of the road and lined them up next to us. This is serious. I could not believe the number of people that showed up that early. Some of our friends got there after us and didn’t get in before 7am when the balloons started launching.
It was very chilly that morning. it was around 30 degrees and there was a heavy frost on the ground. Off in the distance there was a light fog. Before we knew it, they started inflating the first balloon. Then others started filling up and soaring into the sky.
As the first balloons were filling up and taking off, the fog suddenly got really heavy.
It got so bad that at one point you couldn’t see the balloons thirty or forty feet from you.
If you’ve never been to see the hot air balloons, make sure you get there this year. It is pretty spectacular. I didn’t get a lot of great shots this year because of the fog, but it is a spectacular sight to those giant balloons towering overhead. They also have a bunch of themed balloons, such as a clown and a huge dog.
