Last night, Rose and I went out to the monthly Albany Tweetup.  According to Urban Dictionary, a tweetup is “A group of friends on Twitter (social network) that are planning to meet up. A request by a user to meet with friends via Twitter.”  That is one of the definitions they list on their site.  I kinda like the nerd one the best.  Each month Cassie chooses a location and a bunch of us gather to hang out, catch up and make new friends.  It is a lot of fun, and so far, they have all been at great restaurants or bars.  My personal favorite was the Sushi Tweetup, but that’s just me.

While we were there, Cute Ella mentioned something that got me thinking.  I missed the beginning of the conversation because it was loud in the bar (and because my hearing is horrible), but I heard the part about ‘you’ve gotta know your readers’.  She was dead on and the lightbulb flickered above my head.  I am not sure how many readers I have, as a lot are just lurkers and never comment.  This made me wonder about some of you sitting there reading this and think – what do they like?  What are their hobbies?   Favorite color?  I have no idea.

So, I want to put you all on the spot.  I would like to know a few things about you.  Tell me a few things about you that I might not know, and I will in turn answer a question from you.  Please keep the questions work safe, as this is a family blog and I’d like to keep it that way.  I will do my best to answer your questions, so long as they are appropriate.  Ready?  Let’s go!

See ya soon!

So you think you can blog?

Last night, I attended the Times Union’s “Media 2010: How Blogs Shape The New Conversation” at the St. Rose campus in Albany.  This was the first time the Times Union had held this type of event, and I think it went very well.  A few of their top bloggers were tapped to explain how blogging works, how to build a following, and the influence it has on the public.

A few points that I remember off the top of my head are the following;

  • 1/3 of readers only read the paper
  • 1/3 of readers only read online
  • 1/3 of readers read blogs and the paper
  • The TU blogs have an average of about 1,300 comments  day
  • There are currently 155 blogs on the TU site

There were  few more points, but I did not write them down.  One thing that really bothered me that they touched on was anonymity.  Someone spoke about allowing anonymous commenters to say whatever they want.   I think this is a horrible idea.  Anyone can talk trash hiding behind their keyboard and not have to suffer and consequences.  I think it is a cowardly way to act.  They should require every commenter to use a name.  Granted, people could still make up a fake name, but they can do an IP trace and figure out if it is the same person using a different name each time.  Think about it.

Another key point they touched on at the event was to make sure you drive traffic to your site using Twitter and Facebook.  Commenting on other blogs is also another way to get people to your blog.  Networking at events is a good way to get people to your blog as well.  Keep a business card with your name, email, Twitter handle and blog address on it and give it to people you meet.  It can be a valuable tool, not only for driving people to your blog, but also for making a possible future business or personal contact.

I would like to thank Michael Huber and the Times Union for hosting this event last night.  I feel that  it was very informative, as well an excellent networking event.  While I was there, I met a few new people and some people I knew from Twitter, but hadn’t met in person yet.  There are a few that were there that I didn’t get to meet and wish I had.  Here are a few people that I met and their name and the name of the blog they write;

Please be sure to check out their blogs and leave them some comments.  There are some really great blogs on the Times Union web site.  Before I wrap this up, I wanted to ask you a question.  If you were to start a blog, what would you write about?  If you do have a blog, what is it about?

*Edit –  I wanted to add that we got to spend some time with Kevin Marshall last night.  Not only is he extremely straightforward and blunt, he is also a writer, actor and self-proclaimed ‘sex symbol’ in the Albany area.  I have also heard that he is the Lt. Governor.  I can neither confirm nor deny that last statement.

**My Twitter handle is @tcrpmg***

Today’s post is going to be a little different than my usual blogs.  As I try to establish a base of daily readers and have a successful blog, I want to know my readers.  I’d like to get to know everyone that reads my blog and have their feedback.  What would you like to see or read?  Tell me.  I want to know.  Let me know about things that interest you in a blog.

I would also like to know what type of social media you use.  Do you use Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter?  What do you know about search engine optimization (SEO)?  Are there other social media sites that I don’t have listed here that you use?  I would also like to know blogs that you read.  I would like to expand my daily blog intake.  I have learned over the last month that I really enjoy blogging and reading other people’s blogs.

In the near future, I also plan to start doing reviews of photography related products.  I was contacted by someone from LowePro today about reviewing their camera bags, so I hope to be writing reviews of them very soon.  If you are familiar with their bags, you will know they make a quality product that lasts.  I currently have the Lowepro Mini Trekker Backpack camera bag that is 8 years old and still looks like brand new.  I use it all the time.  I go hiking with it, lay on it, wear it on the motorcycle.  It is top notch.  I am honored to get this opportunity.  I simply can not wait to start testing their products.  So, tell me what you look for in a camera bag too, and I might be able to test one that is more specific to your needs.

I would really love to hear from you on these topics.  Let me know what you like.  Take a minute to leave a comment.  Subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss a post.  it wont hurt a bit!  See you soon!

Cassie is the person who busts her hump for the awesome Albany Tweetups we have.  This month’s Tweetup is going to be a Sushi Tweetup.  Cassie also writes a great blog called No Day But Today.  Oh, and she likes fast cars too.  That’s OK in my book.
